We run week-long Day Hike and Bike Camps, suitable for all skill levels for new as well as returning Adventurers. Suitable age for Hikers is 7 and up. Teenagers are welcome! Bikers can be beginner mountain bikers, and we have camps for ages 7-10 & 10-12. Camps run from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm out of Bragg Creek. We provide all the food.

We offer pick-up at the 69th Street SW LRT station or Canada Olympic Park in Calgary @ 7:45 am and/or an agreed to location for $20 per child +GST. We do need 3 kids per pick up location, so call your friends.

Combo Camps are a combination of day and overnight days to ease into the idea of overnighters. Combo Camps start at ages 10 and up. Age groups are arranged depending on the interest we receive. Our camp mixes mountain biking and hiking depending on the group, weather and terrain. No skills or camping experience is required. We provide the food and tents. Sleeping bags & sleeping pads can be rented for a small fee.

New for the Summer 2023 are the advanced Adventure Camps. We offer Front Country Hiking and Biking Camps. For these camps we ask that the adventurers have some camping experience (in a tent) or have been part of one of our camps. We stay in camps that are reachable by car or bike. The biking camp is a down hill mountain biking camp and some mountain biking experience is required. Ages 13 and up are welcome for this particular biking camp. The Front Country Hiking Camps don’t require hiking experience. Two dates are planned for the hiking camp: one for ages 10-12 and one for ages 12 and up. We provide all food and the tents. Sleeping bags & sleeping pads can be rented for a small fee.

Summer 2023 will introduce 5 Day Backcountry Camps to our adventurers. We go for 5 days deep into the mountains leave established trails and stay in our Handle-Bar backcountry camp. These are hiking camps and we ask that adventurers have tent camping experience or stayed with us in a Front Country Camp. We come out as Deep Mountain Adventurers that applied all the backcountry skills we share at the Handle-Bar and more. Ages 12 and up are welcome. We provide all food and the tents. Sleeping bags & sleeping pads can be rented for a small fee.

What Does a Handle-Bar Summer Day Camp Look Like?

Our goal is to offer fun outdoor adventure and activity to our program participants. Similar to all of our other hiking and biking adventures, we aim to make the outdoor accessible to everybody. This means that we are inclusive of all religions, ethnicities, fitness levels, sexual orientation and identifications. It also means that our focus is not to create a competitive environment, but one of fun, learning and support.

Our Kids Day Camp Programs are separated by age groups only, not by skill level within the age group. We focus on a mix of physical activities in the mountains (biking and hiking) and offering knowledge of our surroundings, skills that are activity related, and skills that are relevant for a safe experience in the backcountry. The intensity of physical activity is adjusted to the age group, the interest in the group, and the principle of “Safe and Fun”.

  • Meet at the trailhead. Intro of the guide/guides and short first safety talk.

Short walk to a meadow, where we set up for some games to get to know each other. Let’s call it the ice breaker session.

First warm up hike to our typical lunch and backcountry skills training camp. During our hikes we chat, explore flowers, animal tracks and sounds around us, practice navigation and use of topo maps, compass and reading nature.

Once we arrive at our camp, we set up, have lunch and talk about the things seen.

After a good rest we go on our afternoon hike. Our focus on the first day will be to chat about backcountry safety. While on the hike we use things, we see to address risks, what to do when something goes wrong, reading maps etc.

The distance of the hike will depend on the group's interests. The focus is fun, not achieving a distance or speed goal. We will snack in between.

On the way back to meet parents we discuss wishes for the next day, what of the theory we heard today, what we can practically try tomorrow, and possible concerns about a day of riding bikes.

  • Meet at Trailhead. Check in on bikes, fitting, safety gear.

Morning ride up to a meadow to engage in some skill games and see where everybody is at. First ride along a trail with some fun up and down hill section to get warm.

Lunch at our camp location. Maybe some chatter on trail conditions and what would be good choices for an afternoon long ride.

Afternoon ride finding a good ridge line, and some technical terrain to practice skill. In breaks we chat about trail etiquette. Who else is using the area (human and animal)? What can go wrong on a bike? How do we avoid and how do we fix?

On the way back to meet the parents we always chat about the good, bad and ugly! Expectations and wishes for the next day are always discussed. We want all kids to have a say in what we do.

  • Meet at Trailhead. Morning hike discussing animal tracks and other signs of their presence. Chats about who lives in the area and what environment they need. We take it easy today after two days of more physical activity than some of us typically see, and use the opportunity to explore creeks, build little shelter, talk about drinkability of water, etc.

Lunch at our camp location. If there is an interest, we will build some food hangs for bear safety and if the weather and fire safety allow, we will try building little survival fires.

The afternoon hike will find some higher elevation meadows and ridges. Again, animal awareness will be the focus today. How do we act when we meet animals? How do we avoid meeting certain species?

On the way back to meet the parents we always chat about the good, bad and ugly! Expectations and wishes for the next day are always discussed. We want all kids to have a say in what we do.

  • The morning ride will bring us on a bigger loop today. We will really get into riding and having fun with some more technical trails, practicing corners, efficient uphill, fun downhill. The ride will offer opportunity for rest and snacks when looking on maps and learning to orientate.

Lunch at our camp location. We will check in on navigation tools as compass, topo maps and natural landmarks for orientation. Together we will choose a loop from some options for the afternoon and discuss the obstacles of the routes.

The group will go on the chosen trail, have fun with some skill training and games, while comparing the expected obstacles with those actually found on the trail.

Debrief on the way back to meet the parents and choice of mode of transport for Day 5. Hike or Bike Day?

  • Meet at Trailhead. Check in on bikes, fitting, safety gear (if biking is the choice).

The group will go on a scavenger hunt for the day. At lunch we build a shelter with the materials we find in the woods.

The scavenger hunt will end at the trailhead with a prize to be celebrated.

Have More Questions?

What if my child doesn’t have much experience with these activities?

All the more reason to join in! We love the outdoors, and want to share that passion with children who may not have the chance to get out very often. You don’t need to be experienced to get out for a trail ride or enjoy a walk in nature. Activities are varied throughout the day, providing opportunities to rest and interact, making new friends.

I can’t drive to Bragg Creek every day. Do you offer a ride service?

We sure do! We understand that you want your child to be able to participate in this fabulous week of fun, but it may not be feasible to drive out each day. We offer rides from downtown or SW Calgary and from Millarville. After selecting your camp in the registration system, be sure to add on the Ride Service appropriate for you. More details are provided below.

I’m not prepared to invest a bunch of money into a mountain bike for my child, when I don’t know how often they’ll use it. Can you help?

That’s a big part of why we started Handle-Bar. We understand the concern, and want to help out occasional riders, or people exploring different activities. We rent a variety of bikes, helmets, riding gloves, in children and adult sizes. Check out our Rentals page for more details.

My child isn’t comfortable sharing a tent with others. Can they have their own tent?

Absolutely! We can accomodate tent sharing or individual tents.

My child prefers to use the pronouns they/them. Will you respect this?

We want everyone to feel valued and respected while participating in our programs. Everyone is welcome, and we will honour a child’s preferred name and pronouns.

Testimonials

“Our 6 year old spent last week at Handle Bar's kids hiking & biking camp and had a blast. The instructors, Moritz & Katie, were well prepared to take care of the kids, of varying ages, out on the trails every day and always kept us informed of the plans and recapped how the day went. We heard great stories of them learning about wilderness safety, animals, campfires, and some great adventures in the woods. Just what we were looking for! Highly recommend taking advantage of this great camp opportunity in Bragg Creek!”
